The Hungarian Language

The Hungarian language is a so called Uralic language and spoken throughout Hungary, Serbia and parts of Romania and Slovakia. It is neither a Romance language, nor a Germanic. It is a little difficult for English speakers to go to Hungary, because there are very few words that you will recognize from English, but it’s a beautiful language in the world, and it will reward you well. Let us start to know about the Hungarian alphabet first:
There are 44 letters in the Hungarian alphabet (more than in the English alphabet, which has 26) see bellow:

A a Á á B b C c Cs cs D d Dz dz Dzs dzs E e É é F f G g Gy gy H h I i Í í J j K k L l Ly ly M m N n Ny ny O o Ó ó Ö ö Ő ő P p Q q R r S s Sz sz T t Ty ty U u Ú ú Ü ü Ű ű V v W w X x Y y Z z Zs zs

Primary Hungarian Grammar

Hungarian is an agglutinative language. Most grammatical information is given through suffixes. For example: at the table = az asztalnál (space relation), at 5 o’clock = öt órakor (time relation). There is also one grammatical prefix (leg- for superlatives).
An unusual feature of Hungarian is 2 verb conjugations. The “definite” conjugation is used for a transitive verb with a definite object. The “indefinite” conjugation is used for an intransitive verb or for a transitive verb with an indefinite object.

Hungarian Writing Styles

Hungarian is distinguished by long and short vowels. Between long consonants and short consonants, the long consonants are written double.
Usually a trigraph is a double digraph, but there are a few exceptions, for example: tizennyolc “eighteen” is tizen + nyolc. There are doubling minimal pairs: tol (push) vs. toll (feather).
However uncommon Hungarian orthography and pronunciations seems to native English speakers at first, once learned, written Hungarian is nearly totally phonemic for them.

Finally, let us have a look at some interesting examples. As we have pointed out, Hungarian is not a Germanic language, but it distantly related to Estonian and Finnish. Some examples for words shared with other Uralic languages:

Finnish: kala

Estonian: kala

Hungarian: hal (fish)

Finnish: kuusi

Estonian: kuus

Hungarian: hat (six)
