As a translator, I think, one of his or her best benefits falls into the chance to get familiar with new concepts and to witness the coming of some future trends.

As we all know, technology has been developing at its full speed in recent years, resulting in our immersion in a technological world. A Translator working in technology material translation is likely to realize a future trend is about to come to us.

Taking my recent work as an example, it’s about a 3D software manufacturer, which involves its key technology in 3D applications including coast roller track design and motor design. First glimpse over coast roller track design, I recalled a sad accident that happened in the Overseas Chinese Town of Shenzhen in last year.

According to the reports, the malfunctioned rocket-launch simulator is of serious design defects, including lack of consideration on alternating load on a bolt (16 mm diameter) inside the middle guide pillar of the cockpit supporting system during the design phase, lack in fatigue assessment, and in the structure design phase, the responsible party didn’t pond over effective measures to meet pre-tightening force required by the bolt in on-site installation and maintenance.

In addition, problems also exist in terms of equipment manufacturing, installation and adjustment, and usage, exactly speaking, during welding the no. 5 cabin’s side guide pillar, there was a problem with poor soldering, which resulted in complete fracture upon stress; though having noticed the bolt was loose in the installation and adjustment phase and has taken some measures, technicians didn’t eradicate the potential risk of the equipment’s technological safety.

Due to all the above defects, the bolt of the middle guide pillar in the no. 5 cockpit supporting system suffered a fatigue fracture, resulting in a lack of balance for the supporting system, and then fractures suffered by the hydraulic cylinder and side guide pillar. From this case, I realize this may pose a business opportunity for this 3D company to construct a cooperation link with the Overseas Chinese Town of Shenzhen.

Combined with many reports on the 3D applications like theaters, smartphones, blueray video players, and so on, I feel there is a strong trend of 3D technology, which for businesses is a signal of potential profits that companies can gain through snapping the great opportunity in the relevant industry.

I happened to read a piece of local news about 3D technology. One of the world’s leading technology (3D application development) solution providers, SuperD, announced the Entertainment Technology Center of Carnegie Mellon University and it reached a cooperation agreement on 23, March 2011. SuperD is a local enterprise in Shenzhen.

Based on the fact that this is a very recent report, can’t we feel China has also been working hard to take advantage of the 3D technology market and we are witnessing a spectacular competition is coming?

From searches, I have known there are two main 3D technologies that are popular nowadays:

1. Polarized, or Passive Technology 被動式或稱偏光式技術

2. Active Technology(active shutter technology ): 主動式快門技術
