I usually forget some appropriate or exact words to express my thoughts when translating, it seems the words were about to jump out, but I just couldn’t remember, and bring it out from my memory database, which is really annoying. The biggest adversary to memory is oblivion which we have to try to avoid and overcome.

As long as we proceed aware exercises, to mater the rules and methods of memory, we can get the situation improved .Here I think there are some ways we can do in our daily life to ameliorate this problem.

1. The volume for memory in our brain is limited, so in order to get improvement, we need to reduce the burden of memory. Herein, we can use the abbreviative method. For example ”WTO”, we all know it’s for World Trade Organization. We just need to remember the three letters, then we can use it as the clue to remember all. A lot of people have a good memory, it’s not because he or she must has a better brain than others, but lies in who is good at using the clue.

2. When handling a complex task, we rely on our ‘working memory’. A more efficient working memory contributes to better learning, planning, reasoning and more. One way to increase working memory capacity indirectly is through expressive writing. You sit down for 20 minutes a few times a month and write about something traumatic that has happened to you.

3. Nature has a magical effect on us. One of nature’s beneficial effects is improving memory. In one study people who walked around a beautiful ambience did 20% better on a memory test than those who went for a walk around busy streets. In fact you don’t even need to leave the house. Although the effects aren’t as powerful, you can just look at pictures of nature and that also has a beneficial effect.

4. Speak the words loud, this is surely the easiest of all methods for improving memory: if you want to remember something in particular from a load of other things, just say it out loud. A study found memory improvements of 10% for words said out loud.

5. Meditation has been consistently found to improve cognitive functioning, including memory. In one recent study, participants who meditated only 20 minutes, once a day, saw boosts to their working memory and other cognitive functions.

6. We don’t just think with our minds, we also use our bodies, use our body gesture to encode memories. For example, a lot of researches have shown that we understand language better if it’s accompanied by gestures. We can also use gestures to keep memories. There are Researchers tried to teach Japanese verbs to English speakers and found that gesturing while learning helped encode the memory. Participants who used hand gestures which suggested the word were able to recall almost twice as many Japanese words a week later.

I believe as long as we can insist on keeping these habits. the more we practice, the better effects we can get.
