Since the day March 5th, 2012, I have been a translator for more than three months. During the period, I increasingly realized translating is a job need to be done by heart. Sometimes it’s your patience decide the quality of delivery rather than your knowledge.

It’ easy to assess the translating job, just two index – quality and quantity. Both of them I don’t perform well now, still have some personal experience. And I want to talk about the quality related to English – Chinese translation. Every translator knows quality is the footstone, how to guarantee it, I have learned two important points from my own practices.

1. As perfect as possible at first time.

If you take your first translation as the last process, your attitude will be totally different, you will pay more attention to your job, and the brain will run faster, result in better quality.

When I engaged the job first couple of weeks, I’m afraid I can’t finish it on time, I did the job as fast as I can, even began the translation before I had understood the sentences. And I thought if I got the job done before delivery time, I still had chance to correct. However, in fact, the inspiration and idea are gone in a flash, you should grab them when they appear, or else they could just disappear for good. You can’t rely on the review too much, it can pay a role to integral grasp, but the draft translation has been formed essentially.

1. Reading the editorial manuscript timely.

As we all known the best way to improve your level of translation is reading editorial manuscript, but the time when you reading is critical. In my case, I tend to delay, it is a bad habit, the effect will be discounted. You should read it as soon as you get it, since your own draft translation is still clearly in your brain, you can find your mistakes and poor largest and soonest, and it will impress you most.

There are many other factors can affect your translation quality, such as your Chinese level, whether make full advantage of TM, whether learn enough about the background knowledge, your English comprehension and so on. There is no ending for translation job. Fortunately, CCJK has a tradition for learning and training, we value the improvement of professional ability, as it can deliver our customers better service.
