在法律翻译中，经常会看到一些约定俗成或是格式化的固定用法，而这些词若不明就里地进行翻译，不仅会破坏法律言语的严肃性和严谨性，还会引发一些贻笑大方的错误，或是产生更严重的后果。因此，我们需要熟悉这些固定用语的翻译或用法。

第一个常见的词是：for the purpose of

咋一眼看来，这个词组大概就是“以……为目的”的意思，确实，在法律用语里，有些情况是表达这个意思，然而，法律用语有其独特的表达方式。

如：

例 1： Whoever, for the purpose of illegal possession, uses one of the following means during signing or execution a contract to obtain property and goods of the opposite party by fraud, and when the amount of money is relatively large, is to be sentenced to not more than three years of fixed-term imprisonment, criminal detention , and may in addition or exclusively be sentenced to a fine……

译文：

有下列情形之一，以非法占有为目的，在签订、履行合同过程中，骗取对方当事人财务，数额较大的，处三年以下有期徒刑或者拘役，并处或者单处罚金……

在这里，“for the purpose of”的翻译是“以……为目的”。

除了“以……为目的”这样的表达方式之外，在法律英语中，还有一些词可以表示目的性，如“为”，“为了”，这些都是较为寻常的用法。

而除此之外，还有一些并非表达目的性的用法，如：

For the purpose of these presents any act default or omission of the agent servants workmen or licenses of the tenants shall be deemed to be the act default of omission of the tenants.

译文：基于这些通知，租户的代理人、佣人、工人或所许可者的任何行为、违约或疏忽。

在这里，“for the purpose of”的翻译是“基于”。

而如果for the purpose of 与条例编号加在一起，则与目的性毫无关系了，而应翻译成“为施行……”，如“for the purpose of section 37”。

还有一些比较接近的表达，如“就…….而言”，“为施行……”。

因此，不要小看小小的一个词，把这个词理解正确了，对后续表达的流畅性和准确性大有帮助。
