Prepositions play an essential role in the English language, in which the “with” is an important grammar point as well as a difficult part in this category. We deal with the preposition “with” almost every day during translation and are also easily confused by its many different uses. Therefore, well mastering its uses becomes one of learning objectives many translators have always pursued. Here I’d like to summarize its main uses in context.

1. Being together 与……一起

For instance:

I shall go to China with my family this summer.

Note: the Spark detection system has to be ordered together with the tower dryer.

The process air to be treated enters the scrubber and, after having been cleaned by passing a system of internal baffles and plates in contact with the scrubbing liquid, will be exhausted to the atmosphere in compliance with the emission limits defined.

2. Possessing or carrying sth.拥有或具有某特征

For instance:

PG heat exchanger complete with modulating burner suitable to increase the PG temperature to the required value.

3. because of sth. and as it happens表伴随

For instance:

The resistance varies with the cooling water temperature.

Infiltration usually increases with time, as the pipe network gets older.

The shadow moves with the light.

4. Using sth. to do使用某物……做

For instance:

Tobacco dispersion & expansion with multi-jet steam nozzles

The concrete weights with two halves need to be connected by bolts and they need to be protected with sacrificial Zink Anodes or suitable corrosion protection methods.

First filling will be carried out as directed by the Contractor, to insure a gradually filling with water.

5. On the same side; consent; to support与……一致;拥护

For instance:

The inspection Programme shall be agreed with the Pre-shipment Inspection team.

The expected required average initial dilution at average flow will be 100:1, at peak flow 40:1. This should be decided in accordance with the dispersion dilution criteria after carrying out detailed oceanographic study supported by dispersion models by the CONTRACTOR.

6. In opposition to sb./sth.; be against与……对立;反对

For instance:

She had an argument with her mother yesterday.

A strong team fights with a weak team, who will win?

She had no quarrel with the result.

7. Used when thinking one fact has relations to another涉及一事与另一事的关系

For instance:

Compared with the old method, the new one is much easier.

She won’t be able to help us with all the heavy household chores.

With so many problems to solve, she does not have time to go home.

8. Because of/as a result of, usually used with emotional words因为,由于,通常与表示情绪的词连用

For instance:

After working all day, when standing in the cold wind to wait for the bus , he was dying with hunger and cold.

She has never encountered such annoyed things, she suddenly was red with anger.

She did not become dizzy with success.

9. In spite of sth.尽管

For instance:

With all its defects, she still loves the car most.

10. Concerning/with regard to, in the case of关于,对于

For instance:

Be careful with the water, otherwise your goods will be wetted.

With these children, study fees will be the problem.

The parents are pleased with their child’s exam results, though the results are not good.

11. Used to show the way in which sb. does sth.表示某人行为方式

For instance:

He received an excellent education since he was a child, so he behaved with good manners.

She stands with both hands crossed on her chest.

She only can fall sleep with the door closed.
