Introduction of Tongan
Tongan is a kind of west Polynesian language. It’s one of the two official languages of the Kingdom of Tonga (the other official language is English). The natives usually use Tongan, while citizens and government officials prefer to use English. It is very similar to the languages of Samoan as well as Niue and Uvea (Wallis). Besides the Kingdom of Toga, Tongan is also used in Eastern Samoa, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, USA and Vanuatu. It is an alphabetic language, with basic word order of VSO (meaning verb-subject-object). In total, there are around 200,000 people using this language.
There are 17 letters in the Tongan alphabet, five vowels and eleven consonants and the glottal stop: A a, E e, F f, H h, I I, K k, L l, M m, N n, NG ng, O o, P p, S s, T t, U u, V v, ‘.
Some examples are as follows:
A a, sounds as in father (a);
H h, sounds as in hat (ha);
NG ng, sounds as in singer (nga);
U u, sounds as in root (u);
The last one ‘ is the glottal stop (fakau‘a).
All of these vowels can be lengthened: the doubled-duration vowels are written with a macron over them: ā, ē, ī, ō, ū.
