Easy Inspect Inspection Manual translation project was finished at the beginning of Jan. The proofreading process was relatively painful, because to check sentence by sentence of more than 500 pages was not a simple task.

And during the proofreading process, some issues would be occurred one way or another, but learned how to summarize the mistakes making during the period of translation and increasing my own skills was really worth of consideration. Kindly cited 2 words which pointed out by customers;

Throughout the whole Inspection Manual, Patch and Spot were appeared more than once, and corresponding meaning of these 2 words can be found in the TM. For “patch” the translation is “补丁” and “spot” means “斑点”. The following sentence attached for explanation:

These events, caused by e.g. a spot on the material, are combined to two-dimensional patches.

Translation: 将由诸如材料上的斑点造成的这些事件结合到二维补丁中。

“Patch” was included almost in each chapter, Figuring out the meaning of this word in a separated context. As a verb, it meant “to put a patch or patches on “(打补丁) and as a noun, it meant “patch or dot”(补丁或斑点). Searching from the internet and differentiation was concluded as follows:

When patch occurred with the meaning “补丁”, it mainly used in computer terms, usually indicated software developers, when they just packed or sold several software copies, some errors were detected, but those errors were not fatal.

For these reasons, after software developers released the software, they would work on the original software patches, and made into a program, thus the program was called Patch(补丁), focusing on replacing the existing file directories and collection of files and directories.

But when patch occurred with the meaning “斑点”, Mainly used for color differences on a specific object or material, indicated other kinds of uneven color mixed with the original color on the material. Also refer to small part of impurities occurred on the raw material.

Spot can only be used to describe a defect, the proper explanation of this word is “a point located with respect to surface features of some region”.

With any consideration and just followed the supplied TM and translated the words strictly was not a desirable and suitable behavior. If necessary, we should clearly distinguish the context from the relevant sections or chapters.

In which time, should we use the meaning of this level and when should we use the meaning of another level. Only kept in mind that to distinguish, to verify, thus the zero defect can be maintained in our translation process.
