The English language belongs to the West Germanic language family. Nowadays, it is the third most natively spoken language in the world, after Mandarin Chinese and Spanish, and it is estimated that there are around 380 million native English speakers and 300 million who use English as a second language.

The English language originated from Anglo-Saxon dialects brought to the east cost of Britain around the 5th century AD by Germanic settlers from various parts of today’s northwest Germany, Denmark and the Netherlands. Up to that time, the people of Roman Britain, the Britons, spoke the Celtic language Brythonic (British), as well as a form of Latin as a result of the 400-year Roman occupation.

The Old English language was originally a mixture of various dialects, but eventually Late West Saxon became the dominant one.

Over the centuries and caused by various invasions and the resulting mixing and addition of dialects, English was further transformed and changed to Middle English and subsequently, from around the 16th century AD, to Modern English.

From the 18th century onwards, the expansive British Empire had an immense influence on the world in the fields of science, politics, military, economy and culture. The United States followed along the same lines from the middle of the 20th century.
