Untranslatable Words: Wonder Words

Lost in Translation by Ella Frances Sanders brings to life more than fifty words that don’t have direct English translations with amiable illustrations of definitions of these words. A lot of these words provide insight into the cultures they originate from, such as the Brazilian Portuguese word for running your fingers through a lover’s hair, the Italian word for being moved to tears by a story, or the Swedish word for a third cup of coffee.

In this ingenious and prettily rendered exploration of the delicacies of communication, you’ll find new ways to express yourself while getting lost in the artistry of imperfect translation.

The relationship between words and their meaning is a fascinating one, and linguists have spent countless years deconstructing it, taking it apart letter by letter, and trying to figure out why there are so many feelings and ideas that we cannot even put words to, and that our languages cannot identify.

“Words are but symbols for the relations of things to one another and to us; nowhere do they touch upon the absolute truth.” – Friedrich Nietzsche

10. German: Waldeinsamkeit

A feeling of solitude, being alone in the woods and a connectedness to nature. Ralph Waldo Emerson even wrote a whole poem about it.

9. Italian: Culaccino

The mark left on a table by a cold glass. Who knew condensation could sound so poetic.

8. Inuit: Iktsuarpok

The feeling of anticipation that leads you to go outside and check if anyone is coming, and probably also indicates an element of impatience.

7. Japanese: Komorebi

This is the word the Japanese have for when sunlight filters through the trees – the interplay between the light and the leaves.

6. Russian: Pochemuchka

Someone who asks a lot of questions. In fact, probably too many questions. We all know a few of these.

5. Spanish: Sobremesa

Spaniards tend to be a sociable bunch, and this word describes the period of time after a meal when you have food-induced conversations with the people you have shared the meal with.

4. Hawaiian: Pana Poʻo

You know when you forget where you’ve put the keys, and you scratch your head because it somehow seems to help your remember? This is the word for it.

3. French: Dépaysement

The feeling that comes from not being in one’s home country – of being a foreigner, or an immigrant, of being somewhat displaced from your origin.

2. Urdu: Goya

Urdu is the national language of Pakistan, but is also an official language in 5 of the Indian states. This particular Urdu word conveys a contemplative ‘as-if’ that nonetheless feels like reality, and describes the suspension of disbelief that can occur, often through good storytelling.

1. Swedish: Mångata

The word for the glimmering, road like reflection that the moon creates on water.

About the project

Our client has a time-coded English DVD video, which is used for training for their employees. The client is in need of a professional and qualified team to help them to record it in Tagalog within a tight deadline. They provide us with the English video and Tagalog script. The final audio file specifications need to meet the standards as below: Sample Rate needs to be 44khz, Bit Depth 16 bits, Bit Rate 1500-2500 kbps.

Our solution

We have already backed up a professional Chinese and Tagalog voice over artist before the project coming in. the client choose their preferred voiceover artists. So after getting the confirmation of the project, we downloaded the DVD video file from wetransfer and study the script and video carefully. Unfortunately, when we get contact with our Tagalog voice over artist, we were just informed that he caught a bad cold and cannot help us with it. As the project deadline is tight, so we have to choose another professional and proper voice with abundant voice recording experience for the character, and the artist who is suitable for the descriptive materials. We collect all the resources on hand and choose the right voice. As the audio track needed to be synchronized with the video, therefore, after the recording, we edited these audio files according to video. This step is really a challenge for these DVD, as Chinese and Tagalog is different from English, sometimes, it is longer than the English words after the translation. We need to edit it bit by bit and make sure what the man said is what the video shows. We involved great effort on these and after the editing is finished, we send these videos to Chinese and Tagalog artist to watch and see if there is anything place that should be improved. Finally, we deliver the audio file to our client on time and finish the project successfully.

An online learning marketplace value $5 billion

Google is talking with educational-software companies to help build a marketplace for online learning programs, an industry whose value may approach $5 billion this year. Games and instructional tools for teachers from companies such as Grockit and Aviary are already offered in the Google Apps Marketplace, an online store that opened in March. Google, the worlds largest search engine, seeks to lure more educational developers and is stepping up efforts to generate revenue from the project, executives say. Software sales for US schools and colleges this year should surpass the 2009 total of $4.6 billion, according to Parthenon Group. That could provide a new growth stream for Google, which gets most of its sales from search advertising. The company works with schools, providing free word processing, e-mail and spreadsheet programs to students and teachers. Now it wants to help outside developers sell applications to educators. If we can provide access to education apps to our 10 million users in thousands of schools, then that would be a win all around, said Obadiah Greenberg, Googles business development manager for education. Most software makers with products on Google Apps Marketplace now collect all revenue from sales generated through the site. In the coming months, Mountain View, California-based Google plans to begin taking a 20% share of sales, Greenberg said.

 GOOGLE GURU

Programs in the Apps Marketplace can be operated inside the private Web domains many schools have set up with Google, said James Birchfield, instructional technology specialist at Harwich Public Schools in Massachusetts. A teacher logs into a Google Apps account and they can access anything in the marketplace, said Birchfield, who is known by colleagues as the Google guru. It gives you a one-stop-shop kind of thing where we know we can integrate it and we know where its all saved. Aviary Education, one of the first education apps offered on the site, is a free Web-based tool that lets students edit images and audio recordings in a private environment that can be monitored by a teacher. Its often used by teachers who want students to record class presentations and share them online, said Michael Galpert, cofounder of New York-based Aviary. The more that they promote Google services in the classroom, the larger the audience we get, Galpert said. The company now gets most of its new customers through Googles Marketplace, he said.
