Untranslatable Words: Wonder Words

Photo Courtesy: http://www.untranslatablebook.com/

Lost in Translation by Ella Frances Sanders brings to life more than fifty words that don’t have direct English translations with amiable illustrations of definitions of these words. A lot of these words provide insight into the cultures they originate from, such as the Brazilian Portuguese word for running your fingers through a lover’s hair, the Italian word for being moved to tears by a story, or the Swedish word for a third cup of coffee.

In this ingenious and prettily rendered exploration of the delicacies of communication, you’ll find new ways to express yourself while getting lost in the artistry of imperfect translation.

The relationship between words and their meaning is a fascinating one, and linguists have spent countless years deconstructing it, taking it apart letter by letter, and trying to figure out why there are so many feelings and ideas that we cannot even put words to, and that our languages cannot identify.

“Words are but symbols for the relations of things to one another and to us; nowhere do they touch upon the absolute truth.” – Friedrich Nietzsche

10. German: Waldeinsamkeit

A feeling of solitude, being alone in the woods and a connectedness to nature. Ralph Waldo Emerson even wrote a whole poem about it.

9. Italian: Culaccino

The mark left on a table by a cold glass. Who knew condensation could sound so poetic.

8. Inuit: Iktsuarpok

The feeling of anticipation that leads you to go outside and check if anyone is coming, and probably also indicates an element of impatience.

7. Japanese: Komorebi

This is the word the Japanese have for when sunlight filters through the trees – the interplay between the light and the leaves.

6. Russian: Pochemuchka

Someone who asks a lot of questions. In fact, probably too many questions. We all know a few of these.

5. Spanish: Sobremesa

Spaniards tend to be a sociable bunch, and this word describes the period of time after a meal when you have food-induced conversations with the people you have shared the meal with.

4. Hawaiian: Pana Poʻo

You know when you forget where you’ve put the keys, and you scratch your head because it somehow seems to help your remember? This is the word for it.

3. French: Dépaysement

The word for the glimmering, road like reflection that the moon creates on water.

20140331162759

About the project

The client has some webpages that need to be redesigned and then coded in html. All the content and instructions are provided, the client also provide a website for reference. They would like the website designer with excellent design skills and make the pages look as good as the referenced site, not be an exact copy but also show some originality, also the quality must meet or exceed the referenced site. He requires to be creative, but just something simple, elegant and not too flashy.

CCJK Solution

CCJK assigned a very skilled and professional designer and programmer to complete this job. To make sure of the high quality, the designer designed two types of the pages drafts for the client’s choice firstly, after getting the feedback from the client, we made the updates accordingly.

Then our website designer coded the design to HTML. We use the font to be more comfortable-looking, and change the color for the buttons displayed in the website.

There’s not any problem for CCJK to update several pages to be consistent with the ones they created. Thus, we didn’t proceed to deal with the pages all in one time, we submitted some questions to the client. After getting the feedback about these pages, we made the changes and deliver the final HTML files on time.

About the client

The client is one of the most comprehensive and innovative mental health directory on the web. They purposely keep them free of clutter–so people in need of help can do so with ease and simplicity. The number of people utilizing the internet is expanding each day and video is the next wave. Studies show that people are more likely to engage a website or make a purchase when they can have video contact with the product or service they need. The client has a website which allows people to learn more about mental health professionals in their area so they can make an informed decision about a helping professional.

Case Summer Jasmine 2

In this project, it’s really a tough and long process. I met several problems and get stuck many times. But I still precious this experience as I learned a lot from it.

As the design process finished, what really hard is the IT part. As I am not majored in IT and do not have enough knowledge on this field, it is a little difficult for me to explain our client’s needs and reply our It team’s feedback to the client. On this base, I need to spend more time than others to know the meaning of the two sides and communicate them together. So most of the time I cannot get the point punctually.

The second question is that I don’t know what the IT team need. When I tell the client what content we need to start the project, our client just start to make a start on the preparation. So we need to wait a long time before we start the work.

Such as: For the sound system we have done the discussion and found that the job is quite extensive. We need a clear explanation over the functions of the music player. So, we can give a confined timeline for that or find a way out to implement it.

The artist can make the loudspeaker but it will be time consuming it will take almost 2 days as it has to have the effects of the original material.

So maybe the client could detailed plans of the top, sides and front and also some pictures of other commercial loudspeakers so that we can know your preference.

And for E-commerce Platform, we can do the integration of the shopping cart. And if it is convenient to you, could you provide a domain name, a web hosting service and a payment gateway account you mentioned to me so that the plan can be chalked out.

For the Images: The artist tells me that hand of the girl model is not covered in the photo, the bag in the both images are not properly appearing.The aspect ratio of the model 13 image is disturbed,when try to cover the bag,it is not properly done so far.The hand is cropped if you see the left side of the image. And for model 9, the strip is not shown completely. When the artist balance the image by show the picture above elbow the bag is also cropped.

The most important thing is the content, once content is ready we can bostup it.

DVD Chinese and Tagalog Creation Case Study

20140217180449
About the project

Our client has a time-coded English DVD video, which is used for training for their employees. The client is in need of a professional and qualified team to help them to record it in Tagalog within a tight deadline. They provide us with the English video and Tagalog script. The final audio file specifications need to meet the standards as below: Sample Rate needs to be 44khz, Bit Depth 16 bits, Bit Rate 1500-2500 kbps.

Our solution

We have already backed up a professional Chinese and Tagalog voice over artist before the project coming in. the client choose their preferred voiceover artists. So after getting the confirmation of the project, we downloaded the DVD video file from wetransfer and study the script and video carefully. Unfortunately, when we get contact with our Tagalog voice over artist, we were just informed that he caught a bad cold and cannot help us with it. As the project deadline is tight, so we have to choose another professional and proper voice with abundant voice recording experience for the character, and the artist who is suitable for the descriptive materials. We collect all the resources on hand and choose the right voice. As the audio track needed to be synchronized with the video, therefore, after the recording, we edited these audio files according to video. This step is really a challenge for these DVD, as Chinese and Tagalog is different from English, sometimes, it is longer than the English words after the translation. We need to edit it bit by bit and make sure what the man said is what the video shows. We involved great effort on these and after the editing is finished, we send these videos to Chinese and Tagalog artist to watch and see if there is anything place that should be improved. Finally, we deliver the audio file to our client on time and finish the project successfully.

Database Accessing and manipulating Language SQL (part 1)

psb

Introduction of SQL

SQL, short for Structured Query Language, which is a programming language to access and manipulate databases, meanwhile, it’s as one of ANSI standard. SQL is not only used to access & query data, but also to update and manage the relational database systems. Obviously, the latter function shows its strong performances of Structured Query Language and it’s what critical to administrators.

Statistics shows that SQL is the most important relational database manipulation language now. The influence of Structured Query Language is beyond the database field; it gets attention & adoption in other fields, such as data retrieval of artificial intelligence. Besides, SQL has be embedded in the fourth generation of software development tools.

Structured Query Language exists independently of database itself, and computer, network, operation system used. The SQL-based DBMS products can run in a wide range, from PC, workstation to a variety of computer operation systems (based on WLAN, Minicomputer, mainframe etc.). You can see its good scalability and portability.

Versions of SQL

Although SQL is an ANSI standard, there are different versions of the SQL language. In the beginning, it passed by the American National Standards Institute in October 1986. Then, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has issued a formal international standard SQL. In April 1989, ISO SQL89 standard had been proposed with integrity features. And the SQL92 standard was announced in November of 1992 & it divided database into three levels: base set, standard set and complete set.

There are subtle differences in a variety of databases for its support and standard to SQL. However, they all support at least the major commands (such as SELECT, UPDATE, DELETE, INSERT, WHERE) in a similar manner.

SQL language contains four parts:

Part One: SQL DDL, stand for Data Definition Language: it includes statements like CREATE, DROP, ALTER, etc.

Part Two: DML, stand for Data Manipulation Language, for example: INSERT statement, UPDATE statement and DELETE statement.

Part Three: Data Query Language, such as SELECT statement.

The last part: Data Control Language, for instance, GRANT, REVOKE, COMMIT, ROLLBACK and other statements.

What can Structured Query Language do

Structured Query Language can execute queries against a database;

Structured Query Language can not only retrieve, also insert and update records in a database;

Structured Query Language can delete records from a database;

Structured Query Language can create new tables in a database and even create new databases;

Structured Query Language can create stored procedures in a database;

Structured Query Language can create views in a database;

Structured Query Language can set permissions on tables, procedures, and views;

In this project, it’s really a tough and long process. I met several problems and get stuck many times. But I still precious this experience as I learned a lot from it. Here I want to share it with all of you.

At the past period of this design project, our client said he not prepared to pay for the hours we spent: I have read the designer’s email to you which states that he spent 4 hours on the last revision which was to change the background colour and text colour of the central panel as I requested. I have some knowledge of Photo Shop and know that this is a simple task and can be done by an experienced designer very quickly; I do not accept the designer’s submission of 4 hours and I am not prepared to pay for this time.

This moment what I need is to critical customer issue management. I temporally cancel the last 4 hours and tell him we will clear this situation for him asap. And the client also did some try to prove there are no need to spend so much time.

I consult our PK team and they give me detailed reasons and listed them one by one:
1. The JPEG file sent to client is not a simple image and is multi layered. A URL for the PSD Sample is provided here
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/xgyms0jnwdoj6q9/X2ZWJWkRFY
2. Everything in the JPEG is modified and adjusted into the layers specified for the positioning of the material in the images. When the design is made from scratch keeping in mind it is custom design it takes time.
3. Multiple options are tried various colors and hues of the colors are tried by the designer artist to maintain the symmetry and aesthetics of the pages.
4. Many of the items in the design were extracted by artist using the pen tool and the edges were then smoothened by him which cost him time.
5. The designer artist says that when a change is to be made in the PSD file then he has to manage the layers in the PSD however working in the simple JPEG will be easy to manage.
And we also provide the Show cause reply from the designer to convince our client. From what they said in their mail, I can learn a lot professional knowledge of PS, etc.

Finally consider this client has got more work for us to do, we could give some leniency to him. From this project, well communicate with the clients and provide necessary technical support and assistance to them is very important in our daily work!

css——cascading style sheets

psb

As you have known,these are core static network paper wrought techniques: Html, CSS and JavaScript. What’s html 5? Last time, we have discussed the Html 5 and history versions of html.
What’s the things CSS can show to us? That’s what we’ll discuss this time.

1.CSS (Cascading Style Sheets)
CSS is the standard abbreviation of Cascading Style Sheets, which typically stores a series of styles that will define how to display HTML elements. In a word, it not only beautify web pages, but also make codes simply and useful.
It is to solve the problem of separating presentation from content by attaching the style sheets to HTML files. Obviously, these external style sheet can greatly improve work efficiency because multiple style definitions can be stacked as one and stores in a style sheet.Besides, it can be supported by all major browers. Believe it or not, you’ll be surprised by it as long as you know about it.

CSS is regarded as a breakthrough in the field of Web Design by simultaneously supporting control the styles and layouts of multiple pages. A web developer can defines a style for each HTML element, then he can apply it to any numbers of pages, from navigation page to a small page. The amazing thing is, a simply change of the style can bring global updates.

2.CSS 3 , CSS 2 , CSS 1
As technology renewal is happening every day, the CSS updates too. Just as you guess, there are different members in the CSS family which CSS 3 is the newest version of.
2.1 CSS 3
CSS 3 is divided into many modules. These are some important CSS3 modules:
Selector
Box model
Background and border
Text Effects
2D/3D conversion
Animation
Multi-column layout
User Interface
Nowadays, modern browers have implemented a considerable number of CSS 3 properties. Besides, W3C(World Wide Web Consortium) is still develop and specificate thestyles of CSS3.Should you have any interest,please feel free to let me know at melody.li@ccjk.com.
