Importance of Arabic Language Content

Middle East

Arabic language is one of the most important online language and there has been a significance increase in on-line Arabic content and the most common challenges to Arabic Translation and Localization. The internet usage has grown faster in Arabic-speaking regions compared to elsewhere since 2000, Arabic on-line content is still inexplicably small associated to other languages. The shrinking broadband access in gulf countries and the new policy initiatives by Google and Microsoft are a few factors which may give rise to the amount of on-line Arabic content. While 220 million Arabic-speaking people spread over 20 countries, there is only less than 1% of worldwide Internet content is in the Arabic language, in contrast to 5% of the world population that speaks Arabic.

Arabic Language a high priority with Google and Microsoft.

Arabic was ranked in their top ten languages that need prioritized attention by both Google and Microsoft. Few years ago Maren was released by Microsoft as a Windows extension, which converts Arabic written in Roman characters into Arabic script. According to Microsoft’s page views after Internet Explorer 8 it is the second most popular service used. It was announced in April this year by Google’s regional marketing manager said “One of our biggest missions is to enable Arabic users to find the right tools to enrich Arabic content. It would be great to see more e-commerce in the region, more publishers, more news sites. We are committed to help them.

Arabic Translation initiatives achieving great strides in producing more Arabic Literature.

Abu Dhabi Authority for culture & Heritage launched a major cultural and commercial translation and publishing initiative called Kalima which funds the translation, publication and distribution of high quality foreign writing into Arabic. Kalima selects 100 candidate titles of classic, contemporary and modern writing from around the world to be translated into Arabic every year. Kalima also supports marketing and distribution initiatives by introducing new distribution channels and promoting the Arabic book industry internationally through investment in translation as a profession.

Increasing on-line access in the Arabic-speaking world

The first ever scripts to be registered were in Egypt and Saudi Arabia last year with domain names written in the right-to-left Arabic script. Use of non-Latin script to be used in web addresses was allowed by the global Internet regulator, in November of last year.

Internet access is becoming more reasonably priced in Egypt where the use of Internet on mobile devices is flourishing. Egypt is planning a $1 billion upgrade to its broadband competences over the next 4 years; this will quadruple Internet penetration to 20% of the residents.

Increased global awareness of the importance of on-line Arabic language content

Most international companies in the Arabic region and elsewhere had their websites, marketing materials and tech manuals in the English language only till after the importance of Arabic online content was realized recently. International firms now realize that they must provide Arabic content and localize their on-line content and websites into the Arabic language hence be successful in this huge and rich marketplace:

The majority of Arabic-speaking people are not fluent in the English language.

Arabic culture is significantly different from western or Asian culture; professional localization services and copy writing are needed to address the needs of consumers from this historically rich culture.

The production of smartphones and devices that support wifi on the go has made companies realize that they must communicate with consumers in the Middle East/North Africa (MENA) in their native, Arabic language.

Arabic Translation and Localization Challenges

Very little modern scientific or technical writing originated in Arabic, which creates a shortage of equivalent terminology. While it is not easy to express some computing or technical terms in the Arabic language, a qualified linguist can create custom Arabic terms that accurately express the exact meanings of the source language terms.

Many technical terms are translated into the Arabic language through transliteration, or “coining a phrase”. This practice makes it challenging to find standards for technical terms commonly used in English.

Arabic is a very rich language in term of idioms, accents, registers and styles. Variations in Arabic dialects were influenced by historic and geographic factors. For this reason, it is critical to identify the regional locale of your target audience.

Arabic is a highly expressive language, with many alternate ways to express a message. Machine translation and “cheap” linguistic resources do not work well with this language.

The Arabic Language is bi-directional (Right-to-Left), which will affect page layout and website user interface. For instance the order of table columns must reverse, marginal graphics will “flip”, changing places with the accompanying text.

Arabic DTP (Desktop Publishing) is more labor intensive, as manuals, leaflets and flyers required reversed page order. In some cases, photos and images may have elements that direct the reader’s attention towards the outer edge of the page instead of towards the spine of the book. Different photos and images may be required, along with the services of highly professional Arabic Desktop Publishing specialists and graphic designers.

There is still a shortage of professional Arabic linguists who have access to the required linguistic computing environment and Translation Memory (TM) tools. This is a compelling reason to work with a translation/localization partner who frequently works with Arabic language projects.

Websites or software that perform e-Commerce transactions have additional user interface requirements in Arabic: contextual analysis, rendering and shaping, alternative numeric display, Hijri dates, character extenders for justified text, neutral characters, etc. This is one more reason that it is critical that your Arabic project translation/localization partner must have extensive experience working with Arabic localization.

French APP Localization Case Study

APP

About the project

This client designed an innovative and addictive puzzle game for IOS. He wanted to localize the French game into Japanese. The job is including the translation of Game UI and description on the APP store. Before starting the project, the client provided promotional code for us to test the game. As Apple allow to localize the title for App in App Store, the client would like to rely on translator’s professionalism to decide whether in all situations the APP name & Logo need to be translated or not.

Challenges

1. In order to know more about this game, the translator should play the game before starting the actual translation.

2. The translator should use the game screenshot as reference during translation.

3. The translation has length limit, we should provide the shortest translation on the basis that the meaning is correct and clear.

4. Pay close attention to the accuracy for the specific terms.

5. The localized language should be formal, instructive.

6. Do not translate nor modify in texts that have the symbol #

7. Do not delete or add spaces to the \n symbol in sentences.

8. After the translation get done, the client is required us to review the translation thoroughly and make sure of all the text are correct in their contexts. He needs our green signal to send app to Apple.

Our Solution

 1. We followed ISO 9001 working procedure. The translator is a native Japanese speaker and game player who has more 5 years of extensive experience in specific games. She speaks French well and passed our rigid quality test.

2. We combined with rigid project management system to ensure quality translation and punctual delivery. Our Senior PM prepared the working file, listed client translation instructions and guidelines in detail, scheduled outlines and reference materials to our translators.

3. After the initial translation gets done, we assigned the second translator who has profound game knowledge to review the translation carefully. In this way, the high quality can be  guaranteed.

4. Regarding the APP name, we provided the best option for client.

 Feedback

Great work on an iOS game translation. Fast and effective.

A Guide to Software Translation

A software project can consist of several components, which usually include software, documentation, help, and read me files.

We will focus on the translation of software and documentation (IFUs, user manuals, etc.) as that is what we see more often at our Translations.

SOFTWARE

In general, the process of localizing software includes the translation of the GUI (Graphical User Interface) components of the application, such as menus, dialog boxes, and error and status messages displayed on the screen.

Menus: A menu is a drop-down list of options from which you can make a selection and then perform a desired action, such as choosing a command (like Save As) or applying a particular format to part of a document. It is usually a list of major categories and their subcategories.

1

Dialog boxes: A dialog box is a small window that appears on the screen to request input from or provide information to the user. It typically allows users to change options or settings.

2

Error messages: these are messages displayed when an unexpected condition occurs. They are used when user intervention is required, to indicate that a desired operation has failed, or to give very important warnings.

3

Things you should take into account when translating software:

Space restriction: Usually only a limited number of characters can be used for menu names, commands, options, error messages, etc. It is recommendable to keep the translated strings as short as possible. Keep in mind too that most translation of English expands, so it’s likely that you’ll have to use abbreviations much more often than usual.

Hotkeys: are keys or combinations of keys on a computer keyboard programmed to perform a specific function when pressed. When translating software, hotkeys are usually preceded by the character “&”. In the actual program, however, a hotkey is the underlined letter in a command name which you activate by pressing Alt+<the underlined letter>. That means that &Open will look like Open in the actual program. Do not place hotkeys on letters which reach below the base line such as g, p, j, y, q as they will hardly be visible in the program (the hotkey underline will overlap with the letter). You should only use hotkeys which are available on every keyboard (avoid special characters like ö, ñ, etc.).

In the example above, &Open would be translated as &Abrir in Spanish or &Ouvrir in French.

Variables: are symbols which will be replaced by another string/number/date in the final product. Variables can be represented in several ways, like by % and a letter or number (“%s”, “%d”, “%l”, etc), by {0}, {1}, etc, or just by [text], among others. Please see below some common variables and the parameters replacing them:

Variable Parameter
%s String
%d Decimal integer
%ld Decimal long integer
%u Unicode character
%p Page number

Example: “This test %s is not valid”.

Do not touch variables but place the translated text around them in the correct order. Depending on the word that is inserted at the location of the variable, the grammatical form of some words (“valid” in the case of the example) may vary. This might also depend on the gender of the word that is inserted.

In the example above, if we are translating into Spanish and %s is going to replace the word “number” or “name”, the translation would be as follows: “Este %s de prueba no es válido” In Spanish, the variable should go before “test” and a preposition between these two words is needed. Also, “válido” is a male adjective, as both number and name are of masculine gender in this language.

Ideally the Language Lead or Project Manager will have identified for you what text will replace the variables.  If not, please ask them for guidance in how to treat the variables.  If they can not provide this information, it is permissible to reflect all options (masculine/feminine) in your translations as follows:

“This test %s is not valid” could be translated as Este/a %s de prueba no es válido/a

Control characters: they provide formatting information to be displayed within strings, such as carriage returns or values (percentage, number, etc.). Some control characters are \r, \n, and \t. When translating, they should be left as they are: please be careful not to delete them.

DOCUMENTATION

More and more, devices include software that is necessary for the functioning of the device. For this reason, very often there are references to the software in the device’s manuals. The instructions can refer to software options, menus, system messages, etc. See some examples:

Example 1:

Change these settings as follows:

1. Open the Menu window.

2. Select Mask/Port.

3. Select the desired mask/patient interface type (Table 6-1). Select Accept to apply.

In this example, the words in bold refer to software options.

Example 2:

TABLE 4: Error Codes and Troubleshooting Instructions
Error Code Error Message on Display Troubleshooting Instructions
1A-K System ErrorTurn Unit OffSEE INSTRUCTIONS Disconnect the catheter and turn RF generator power off and then on. If the error recurs, contact Technical Support.
2A Bad ConnectionReplace Catheter or Cable Disconnect catheter and connector cable from RF generator. Press reset button, and reconnect catheter and a new connector cable to RF generator to continue the procedure. If the error recurs, disconnect the catheter, press the reset button and connect a new catheter to continue the procedure.
2D No Matrix PresentReplace Catheter Disconnect catheter. Press reset button and connect a new catheter to continue the procedure.

In the example above, the text on the column Error Message on Display refers to error messages that will appear on screen. These are software references as well.

If there are software references in the text, you need to know if the software has been translated or not. Usually, the PM will give you this information (if not, it is imperative that you ask). You will most likely find it in the linguistic analysis. There might be two cases:

a)     Software has not been translated: in this case, you can leave the software references in English and write the translation in brackets. Another option is to leave the software references in English without a translation in brackets. Either way, it is very important to make sure that the references stay in English as that’s they way they will show on screen. If they get translated in the manual but they are not translated in the software, the user won’t be able to see what is being referred.

b)    Software has been translated: in this case, you will be provided with the translation of the software references and you should use them accordingly. It is very important to use the exact translation of the software reference as that is they way it will appear on screen.

Another thing you should pay attention to is that the documentation of devices can also refer to the keyboard/ buttons which are used to enter commands. Sometimes buttons and keys like “Enter”, “Control”, “Delete”, etc. (see example 3), may remain in the source language and the user will be able to choose to use a localized keyboard.

If these buttons are built into the device (see example 4), they are usually not localized.

Manufacturers are getting better about using symbols instead of words when the buttons are built-in, but this is still something you should take into account during translation.

Usually, the PM will give you this information but again, if not, it is imperative that you ask.

Example 3

Press Enter to save the new volume entered and return to the Syringe/Calibration screen. Press Delete to cancel the changes made and return to the Syringe/Calibration screen.

In the example above, Enter and Delete are keys from the keyboard, so they are most likely to be localized and therefore should be translated. Usually, Microsoft or Mac terminology (depending on the operative system) should be used. The PM or Linguistic Lead should be able to help locate these standard translations for you if you need them.

Example 4

4

When operating the system in Semi-Automatic mode, the ablation cycle will not start automatically after the successful completion of the CIA. Once a successful CIA has been completed, press the ENABLE button and depress the foot switch a second time to initiate the ablation cycle.

In this example, the button ENABLE is built into the device, so we should know if this has been translated in the device. Usually, these buttons are not translated, but this needs to be checked with the PM.

Language Dependent Testing Case Study

Language Testing
About the Project

The client requested us to carry out Japanese language independent testing for their newly designed software. This Japanese testing combining standard testing tasks with some linguistic activities.

Challenges

Language tester needs to do the testing and report bugs into client’s software defect database.
Access and training will be provided by client’s software engineer.
The tasks for language tester are required in the below:
1. Obvious wrong translation – for sure limited by linguistic knowledge of a non-linguist
2. Truncations – for sure there where clear
3. Mismatch terminologies in multiple areas ( ex. menu and dialog have different translation ) – for sure when we look at a dialog level only (not across products)
4. Unappreciable translation for the area where string appear –as long as we’re taking into account expected background of testers.

CCJK Solution

1. We carefully selected a Japanese language tester for this project. The tester has rich experience in localization. He was aware of all types of localization defects.
2. The client created a plan including all necessary info for testing. The Plan contains: Overall scope together with testing estimates; Supported platforms required for testing; ”Easy to follow” test cases separated into various scenarios. In this case, the tester can try to install the builds and play a bit with the software products.
3. Before stating the project, we organized one week training for our language tester with the great support of engineers.
4. We carefully read and followed the client’s instructions of the entire testing project step by step. The tester successfully performed the testing according to Test Cases in the Plan. Completed the result column in Plan with (PASS/FAIL) and add the comments. Summarized the defects found on a daily basis and send the defect report to client in forms of XLS sheet.

About Client

The client is an American multinational software corporation that focuses on 3D design software for use in the architecture, engineering, construction, manufacturing, media and entertainment industries. It is often seen as a bellwether for the broader economy because its software is used in many major global construction projects and the manufacturing of new products. First BIT Case Study

About the project
First BIT’s goal is to help customers grow successful businesses through the development and deployment of tailor-made software solutions designed to boost efficiency. They have lots of documents to be translated from Russian into English and German.

Our Solution
Since the quality is extremely important to the client, our production team paid great attention to the following instructions before final delivery.
1. The English and German translation should use a clear, objective, well-structured and accurate tone. During translation, the focuses are always on the accurate and specific conveying of the meanings. As for the marketing materials, the language should be flexible and promotional but the key technical information must be conveyed accurately.
2. The headings and titles in documentation should be translated using consistent target language structure even if the source is inconsistent in this respect. And the length of the titles cannot exceed one line as requirements.
3. Company and products names in the target language should be checked on http://www.1bit.com/
4. Careless errors, typos, missing translation, inappropriate use of punctuation, too complex and misleading language structures should be avoided.
5. Follow the client’s style guide: including company-specific instructions, grammar rules and other style considerations such as formatting notes regarding spacing, fonts, hyphenation, capitalization, etc.
6. Even though accuracy is the top thing for translation of technical materials; transliteration or word-for-word should be avoided as much as possible, especially for the marketing materials.
7. To ensure the translation quality, we must implement TEP working process and provide 3 different versions of the TEP-process files and the client will have a spot-check all the files internally.

Be Calm APP Translation Case Study

Be Calm is the best Keep Calm and Carry On poster generator for the Windows Phone. Our client need to localize this app into simplified Chinese and traditional Chinese. As you know, localization of mobile applications is not an easy job even for the professional translators. If translators don’t get a good understanding of the usage of the application and have no convenient access to the actual context of what they are translating, they will probably go wrong. Therefore, if we can see the actual GUI of the application and thus know what each button or selectable option does, the translators will be much more proficient in the APP translation, and thus, our client provide us the screenshots of the entire app for reference.

Our solution
CCJK is a professional and veteran app localizer, and we have translated Millionaire city/XBox Time-splitter/ XBox Time-splitter 2/XBox Hitman 2/Samurai II and many other App for our esteemed APP developer clients over the years. For any APP translation project we did, we only choose professional APP translators with exquisite language skills and in-depth understanding of electronics facilities. Professionalism is always the prior concern of CCJK, and it guarantees its translation is fully consistent with international standards. We forged a streamlined yet rigorous QA system that incorporates a strict translation-editing-proofreading (TEP) flow and guarantees both precision and clarity of its document management translation. That is, to make sure of the highest translation accuracy, we will assign not only one translator, but at least 3 linguists to the project: we translate from scratch by a linguist, then pass the translated documents to another editor for reviewing, and finally to a 3rd proofreader for polishing.

Client’s feedback
At first, our client just assigns us to translate the APP into simplified Chinese. After the delivery, the client said the translation was fantastic! Given we did a great job for the simplified translation, he wanted to get the doc also translated into traditional Chinese. Everything went smoothly.
