Abu Dhabi Authority for culture & Heritage launched a major cultural and commercial translation and publishing initiative called Kalima which funds the translation, publication and distribution of high quality foreign writing into Arabic. Kalima selects 100 candidate titles of classic, contemporary and modern writing from around the world to be translated into Arabic every year. Kalima also supports marketing and distribution initiatives by introducing new distribution channels and promoting the Arabic book industry internationally through investment in translation as a profession.

The first ever scripts to be registered were in Egypt and Saudi Arabia last year with domain names written in the right-to-left Arabic script. Use of non-Latin script to be used in web addresses was allowed by the global Internet regulator, in November of last year.

We have got a localization project from a reputable medical client. The target language is Simplified and Traditional Chinese. As the text is quite specialized (It’s regard to diabetes blood glucose monitoring meters and test strips), the client wants us to use well specialized translators – with proper medical and technical expertise. Therefore it is very important to impress them to get further jobs.

Challenges:

  1. The project has been prepared based on paragraph segmentation, so we must check by Concordance search if particular parts have not been translated already as a part of another paragraphs in the past.
  2. Use translated segments as well as whole TM for reference to assure consistency.
  3. Any words with all caps should not be translated as well the texts in red font color.
  4. Follow country unit upgrade guidelines. There should be no double spaces between words and sentences.
  5. There must be no hidden carriage returns in the files.
  6. The translated files must contain the same total number of rows as the English source file. No rows can be deleted or added.
  7. Run spellchecker as well as QA checker verifiers by F7 and F8 before delivery.
  8. Deliver segments after translation and review with status Translation Approved. Return package *sdlrpx is required for the final delivery.
  9. In case of any questions during project, we shall record them into the offered Query Report and send the client that file by e-mail without any delay.

The Client is a team of online digital specialists dedicated to help promote business on the web with SEO, PPC and Social Media. They would like to have a female voice talent to record a short (last for 20 seconds) online advertisement. It will be used for online advertising in the mainland of China. The Artist must have a sweet voice and be able to read English fluently and enthusiastically.

Challenge

1.       CCJK carefully selected several female voice samples for our client’s evaluation, after a careful meditation, the client choose his favorite voice among the samples.

2.       Since the client only provided an online Chinese demo video for our reference. We have to transcribe the demo video and prepare a Chinese script for our artist.

3.       The Audio length should be controlled in 20 seconds.

4.       The final VO file should be in WAV format.

5.       The Chinese recorded file should be synchronized to English Video.

6.       The English product name should be read in pure English accent, soft tone.

7.       The turnaround time is only half working day. We must strictly meet the deadline.

Some clients have not migrated to Trados Studio yet, so all deliveries of translated TTX files must be compatible with Trados 2007.

If you are using Trados Studio 2009 or 2011 for the translation/edit of Trados 2007 TTX files, you need to make sure that the file is saved back to Trados 2007 format without any tag errors prior to delivery. With TagEditor, make sure that tag verification is set appropriately:

a)         Go to Tools > Options….  Verification tab.   Make sure ‘Medium’ or ‘Strict’ is selected.

b)         Tools > Plugins….  Make sure SDL TRADOS Generic Tag Verifier is selected.

c)         Verify the file (Tools > Verify, or F8, or click the Verify button).  This takes several minutes and then a report at the bottom of TagEditor is generated showing the errors.

Generally, all tag errors need to be resolved in order to have a clean file for DTP.  Most times, if there is an error, the file won’t merge at all (although it seems once there are hundreds of errors, TagEditor no longer gives a message).

Having had a good performance for the pilot project, a well-known bank selected CCJK as a preferred vendor for Hmong translations. The next step was that the client would like to move ahead with initial brand training for the ongoing projects. The Training included 1 hour TMS training and 1 hour linguistic training.

Challenges

 1.       The client sent an invite to translators, language lead and project manager. All participants who attend the meeting should sign up for the training session online and create a Brand Central online profile.

2.       After the registered accounts were approved for access to the Brand Central portal, to obtain full access to the resources available on Brand Central, All people need to enroll in an upcoming session of Brand Essentials – 3 hours virtually-led certification course. Upon completion of the virtual workshop, the translators will be given the opportunity to obtain an 80% of higher score on a knowledge assessment to complete certification requirements, and receive full access to Brand Central.

1. The client only certified one Hmong test. They were expecting only one translator to attend the meeting (the one who translated the certification sample). To build up good backups and assure of 5000 words daily capacity including translation and reviewing. The client would like to localize their software and make it available in simplified Chinese to open new markets and new revenue streams. The client use Sisulizer’s Exchange Wizard to create and send us package in exe format that contains a self-installing Sisulizer Free Edition, along with your project file that need to be translated.

Our Solution
Sisulizer is a professional tools for software localization. After getting the package, we begin to translate the text with Sisulizer’s visual editor, a powerful, easy-to-use visual “what you see is what you get” editor. We followed the following steps to finish the project and the client is very satisfied with our translations.

  • Execute the package got from the client and self-installed Sisulizer, save all of the project files in a project folder.
  • Make sure that All is selected at the top in the tree view pane and select the Not translated and For review filters
  • CCJK assigned skilled translators with abundant experience in software localization to translate the Not translated status entries and correct those For review that need to be corrected. When doing the translation, we followed the terminology the client provided strictly.
  • Deactivate all filters on translation completion
  • Select the Default filter in the tool bar in this case, which deactivates all applied filters.
  • Save all of the translations that we finished
  • After the first round of translation is done, we provide the file to our editor and proofreader to eliminate any errors and make sure of the translation with high quality.
  • Select File and then Exchange in the menu bar and click on OK, this opens the file manager in the finished project .slp file location

XTM Medical Questionnaire Localization Case Study

The client has an English questionnaire (it is about “understanding clinical practices / experiences and perceptions of company therapeutic leadership”.) that need to be translated into Thaiwan Traditional Chinese. This project will be done by a new CAT online tool, which is called XTM. All the translation will be completed within 1.5 working days with the daily capacity of 5000 words

Challenges

Key issues for using XTM

XTM displays the text to be translated in segments. The translation environment consists of 4 columns: Segment ID, Source language, Target language and Status.

Select a match by clicking the tick mark next to it or click in the target segment and type out the translation directly.

Segments with an orange or red status need to be translated. When the translators have finished translating these segments, the status will automatically turn green.

Regarding the inline elements (curly brackets e.g. {1}.) in the target segment, actually it represented formatting texts and the final translation will be achieved by putting the cursor in the desired location and typing Alt + number on keyboard.

Double click on a word in the source or target text to select it and then right-click, then a context sensitive menu appears.

The quality assurance checks happen automatically when the translator set a segment to translate.

Click on the word then XTM displays a number of suggested spellings for the word. Select one of these words or add it to the custom default dictionary.

Three audios are included in the transcription projects, which each last 30 to 40 minutes of .These videos are in poor quality and bring with background noise, especially buzzing over every entire audio. Besides, transcriptions are urgently required for use, only one and a half days as delivery time. So the balance is a must between quality & time.
Challenges
As referred, sound affect is so poor. Besides, topics are about strong dispute & have something with law. The most challenging thing is, one speaker is American who speaks Chinese brokenly and sometimes talks a series of English mixes with little Chinese vocabularies. So it will spend more time than usual videos.
But the client asks us for help in transcribing all details with few omissions. Obvious, it brought great challenges to our job even for native Chinese speakers.
For most of transcription materials, rules will be followed as below:
1. Everything will be kept, not only what we can heard of, but also others will be marked, such as interjections, hesitations and breaks.
2. If there have several unintelligible words in audio, the transcriptionists are not allowed to ignore the speech. It is required to mark “unintelligible” in the script.
3. When a person obviously mispronounces a word, the word must be spelled correctly and then add a memo in the script.
