Afrikaans origin

As a West Germanic language, Afrikaans is a spoken natively in South Africa and Namibia. It is derived from Dutch, originating in its 17th century dialects. Although Afrikaans borrowed many words from other languages such as Malay, Portuguese, French, the Bantu languages or the Khoisan languages., more than 90 to 95 percent of Afrikaans vocabulary is ultimately of Dutch origin.

Therefore, the main differences with Dutch often lie in a more regular morphology, grammar, and spelling of Afrikaans. There are many similarities between the two languages—especially in written form—although it is easier for Dutch-speakers to understand Afrikaans than the other way around.

From about 1815 Afrikaans begin to replace Malay as the language of instruction in Muslim schools in South Africa. Afrikaans, written with the Latin alphabet, started to appeared in newspapers and political and religious works in about 1850.

Then in 1875 a group of Afrikaans speakers from the Cape formed the Genootskap vir Regte Afrikaanders (Society for Real Afrikaners), and published a number of books in Afrikaans, including grammars, dictionaries, religious material and histories. They also published a journal called the Patriot.

In 1925 Afrikaans was recognized by the government as a real language, instead of a slang version of Dutch. Afrikaans has changed little since then.
